Spain: Thick layers of ice fill streets in Mallorca after 'freak' hailstorm

A hailstorm fills the streets with ice and water

It took just 15 minutes for streets in Mallorca to be filled with ice, witnesses said as they described what local media coined a "freak" hailstorm.

The powerful hailstorm on Thursday left the city of Cala Ratjada on the Spanish island covered with thick layers of ice.

Local media outlet Majorca Daily Bulletin described the phenomenon as a "freak hail storm".

Residents were also quoted saying they had never seen anything like it before.

Videos show the thick sheets of ice in the city and cars navigating through ice water.
