Football stand collapses in front of shocked players as Vitesse fans celebrate victory
Dutch football fans had a lucky escape after a stand collapsed beneath them while they celebrated their team's victory.
Visiting Vitesse Arnhem players were celebrating their 1-0 victory on the pitch in front of their fans at NEC Nijmegen’s Goffert Stadium when the lowest section of the stand collapsed. About 35 people were standing on the section that was affected. There were no reports of any injuries.
Fans quickly clambered up and continued their celebrations, seemingly untroubled by the incident.
One player put his hands on his head as the stand collapsed. When it became apparent no one had been hurt, the players punched the air.
NEC director Wilco van Schaik told Dutch broadcaster NOS that, as far as he knew, nobody was injured.
“There was a container under the stand and that prevented anything more serious,” he said.
Nijmegen Mayor Hubert Bruls said he was shocked.
