Tokyo 2020: Tom Daley wins bronze medal in men's 10 metre platform
Tom Daley has won another medal for Team GB, this time taking bronze in the men's 10 metre platform at the Tokyo Olympics.
Despite a near-faultless display in the final, Daley finished third behind Chinese pair Yang Jian, who took silver and Cao Yuan who won the gold.
Daley led at the halfway stage after three successive 90-plus points scores but dipped below that standard of excellence with an 80.5 from his armstand back three somersaults with pike, which saw him slip off the pace.
He added to his medal collection - which now stands at four - after winning gold alongside Matty Lee in the synchronised competition but his 13 year wait for a solo gold continues to be elusive.
His Olympic debut came when he was just 14 and he now has three bronze medals and one gold medal from his efforts at the Games over the years.
The Plymouth-born diver has impressed onlookers with his expertise in an unlikely pursuit in recent days.
After being pictured knitting in the stands in Tokyo, he revealed a Team GB cardigan complete with the Japanese for "Tokyo" on its front, the Team GB and Olympics emblems across its back, and a Union flag on its sleeve.
He shared images of the patriotic apparel on TikTok and his Instagram account madewithlovebytomdaley - which is dedicated to knitting and crochet.
Daley's knitting Instagram page had around 100,000 followers at the start of the week but now boasts almost one million after he caught the attention of the cameras at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre knitting his way through the diving events.
The diver made his Olympic debut in Beijing before finishing third in the 10m platform in London in 2012 and synchronised 10m platform in Rio in 2016.
After winning gold, Daley said he hopes his victory acts as an inspiration for the LGBT community.
"I hope that any young LGBT person out there can see that no matter how alone you feel right now, you are not alone. You can achieve anything," he said.
The Briton had an overall score in the 10 metre platform of 548.25, while Cao Yuan won gold with 582.35 and second placed Yanh Jian scored 580.4.
