UK Covid death toll rises by 236 as further 5,947 people test positive for virus
A further 236 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, according to the latest UK government figures.
It brings the total death toll - of those who died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus - to 124,261.
Under a different measure, factoring in all fatalities where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate, the UK’s statistics agencies place the death toll close to 145,000.
Alongside the latest death figures, the government said a further 5,947 lab-confirmed cases of the virus had been recorded - bringing the total to 4,207,304.
England
A further 174 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 84,091, NHS England said on Friday.
Patients were aged between 26 and 102. All except six, aged between 61 and 89, had known underlying health conditions.
The deaths were between April 13 and March 4, with the majority being on or after March 1.
There were 30 other deaths reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.
Scotland
Health authorities in Scotland reported 11 new deaths among people who had tested positive for Covid.
An additional 498 new confirmed cases were reported.
Wales
There have been a further 230 cases of coronavirus in Wales, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 204,692.
Public Health Wales reported another 12 deaths, taking the total in the country since the start of the pandemic to 5,378.
Northern Ireland
The latest daily figures from the Department of Health show two more Covid deaths in the past 24-hour reporting period.
It brings the official death toll as recorded by the department to 2,068.
There have also been 166 new positive cases, out of 1,880 individuals tested.
