The Golden Globes is known for kicking off award season in Hollywood but this year things will look very different.

The pandemic meant that today's nominations for the 78th Golden Globes were announced virtually for the the first time ever.

Usually held in Los Angeles, this year's awards will take place online on February 28 and will be hosted by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Female Directors:

It's been six years since a woman was nominated in the Best Director category at the Golden Globes.

That has finally come to an end after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - the voting body behind the famous awards show - nominated three women in this year's category.

Chloe Zhao has been nominated for the film 'Nomadland', Emerald Fennell for 'Promising Young Woman' and Regina King for 'One Night in Miami'.

Who got the most nominations?

'Mank', a biographical drama about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, picked up the most film nominations, with 6 in total.

When it comes to television, 'The Crown' sits at the top of the nomination table, also with 6.

Netflix reigned supreme picking up a total of 42 film and TV nominations ahead of the awards.
