Australia suffers highest number of daily coronavirus deaths

Australia reported its highest number of deaths in a single day since the coronavirus outbreak began, with a further 19 confirmed to have died in Victoria.The death toll in the country has now reached 314, with two-thirds of those taking place in the state of Victoria.

Care homes, which have recently suffered outbreaks, accounted for 14 of the latest deaths.

There was some more positive news for the country, as they also reported the lowest number of new daily cases since July. 

Victoria reported 322 new infections on Monday, down from 725 just five days ago, with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying he was hoping the figures were stabilising.



The number of new cases was the lowest recorded in Victoria since July 29. 

Victoria State Premier Daniel Andrews said that one could not ascertain too much from a single day’s data.

The state’s latest more stringent lockdown measures only came into effect at midnight on Sunday.

Since the outbreak began, Australia has reported more than 21,000 infections and more than 300 deaths.
