Coronavirus: Large rises in North West and Swindon as figures released for each local authority in England

Swindon and parts of the north west of England have seen significant rises in their coronavirus rates, new figures from the NHS have revealed.

The Covid-19 cases per 100,000 for every local authority in England have been revealed with the release of the rolling seven-day rate of new infections.

Many of the areas which have experienced increased infection rates are ones which have been placed under localised lockdown by the government.

The figures, for the seven days to August 3 are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The seven days covered by the figures includes the period of time following July 31 when restrictions were imposed on parts of the north west.

Notable jumps have occurred in north west areas including Stockport, Oldham, Tameside, Salford and Bolton.

Swindon - which is not under increased restrictions - has seen the biggest increase in its cases per 100,000, jumping from 24.3 last week to 44.1 in the most recent figures.

When several areas of the north west were placed under local lockdown, the most recent available figures for some of those regions showed case rates lower than the most recent rate for Swindon.

It suggests Swindon could be nearing the point where local measures are implemented in order to slow the spread of coronavirus.

The list is based on Public Health England figures updated on August 6 on the Government’s coronavirus online dashboard.

Below the full list of case rates per 100,000 for England's local authorities, showing the rate of new cases in the seven days to August 3. The case rate for the previous seven days can be found here.
