Lebanon awoke today to devastating scenes as it enters a day of mourning, after more than 100 people were killed and at least 4,000 injured during an explosion that rocked the seaport in Beirut the day before.
Smoke from the blast continues to rise over the flattened port area, while bloodied residents and rescue teams look for the injured and their loved ones under the rubble left behind by the explosion.
Interior Minister Mohammed Fahmi told local media that the blast was likely triggered by the detonation of more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been stored in a warehouse at the port since being confiscated from a cargo ship in 2014.
