Melania Trump statue in Slovenia removed after being torched
A statue of Melania Trump in her home country of Slovenia has been removed after being set on fire.
It was the first statue of the US First Lady in Slovenia and was the brainchild of US artist Brad Downey.
Mr Downey hired a local craftsman to erect the statue by the river Sava, near Ms Trump's hometown, Sevnica.
Slovenian police were called to investigate the torched statue on the morning of July 5.
Mr Downey filed a criminal report the same day and later removed the partially damaged sculpture.
The artist posted a video of the statue being taken down on Instagram.
Officers are treating the offence as "damage to property" and have opened an investigation.
When the statue of the First Lady was erected a year ago, local residents called it "a disgrace".
Despite them being proud of Ms Trump, the town's most famous export, they were not at all pleased with the statue's likeness to her.
One resident said: "It doesn’t look anything like Melania. It’s a Smurfette. It’s a disgrace."
The statue is not the only Trump statue in Slovenia.
In August last year, architect Tomaz Schlegl erected a huge wooden statue of President Donald Trump some 20 miles away from the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana.
In January this year, the Donald Trump statue was burnt to the ground.
