UK coronavirus death toll rises by 126
The coronavirus death toll in the UK has risen by 126 to 44,517.
The figures, as of 5pm on Tuesday from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which are thought to have passed 55,000.
The DHSC also said that in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Wednesday, there were 630 positive test results.
Overall, a total of 286,979 cases have been confirmed.
England
A further 42 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in hospitals to 28,969, NHS England said.
Patients were aged between 22 and 100 years old and six people aged between 60 and 94 had no known underlying health conditions.
NHS England also confirmed it had reduced the total number of confirmed deaths in English hospitals by 12 to remove deaths previously reported twice in error.
Wales
Public Health Wales said a further four people had died after testing positive for Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths to 1,538, while the total cases recorded in Wales increased by 13 to 15,913.
Scotland
A total of 2,490 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, up by one from 2,489 on Tuesday, Nicola Sturgeon said.
The figures are lower than the 4,173 deaths given earlier by the National Records of Scotland as they do not include suspected and probable coronavirus infections.
Speaking during the Scottish Government’s daily coronavirus briefing, Ms Sturgeon said 18,309 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by seven from 18,302 the previous day.
There are 767 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, an increase of 68 on Tuesday.
Of these patients, 11 were in intensive care.
