Harry Styles said he experimented with magic mushrooms during the recording of his forthcoming album.

The former One Direction star revealed that he bit the end of his tongue off while on the hallucinogenic drug.

The 25-year-old told Rolling Stone magazine the took the drug at a recording studio in the US.

“We’d do mushrooms, lie down on the grass, and listen to Paul McCartney’s Ram in the sunshine. We’d just turn the speakers into the yard,” he said.

Styles took the drugs in the form of chocolate edibles, according to Rolling Stone, and used a blender to mix them.

He said: “You’d hear the blender going, and think ‘So we’re all having frozen margaritas at 10am this morning’.”

Pointing to a corner at Shangri-La studios in Malibu, Styles said: “This is where I was standing when we were doing mushrooms and I bit off the tip of my tongue. So I was trying to sing with all this blood gushing out of my mouth. So many fond memories, this place.”

Magic mushrooms have been illegal in the UK since 2005 and are categorised as a Class A drug.

The Drugs Act 2005 ended the situation in which fresh magic mushrooms were legal but those which were dried or prepared for use were not.

While experiencing a “trip”, users can have visual and auditory hallucinations, similar to the drug LSD.

Anyone found in possession of the drugs can be handed a prison sentence. Magic mushrooms are also illegal in the US.
