UK enjoys hottest ever February day as temperature hits record high

Monday became the warmest ever February day after a temperature of 20.3C was recorded at Trawsgoed in West Wales.

The Met Office say it is the first time a temperature has risen above 20C in winter since records began.

The previous record temperature was 19.7C, which was set in London in 1998.

The Foehn effect is seen as the reason behind the increase in temperatures for this month.

It entails moist air off the Atlantic will bumping into westward facing hills, makes it lose much of its moisture, generating energy and heat, giving warming conditions as that air comes downslope on the eastern side of Britain's mountains and hills.
