'This is pigeon, yes?' Meghan and Harry tuck into unusual pie on final day of Morocco visit
It might sound like something from the days of King Henry VIII but pigeon pie was served up to Prince Harry and Meghan on their tour of Morocco this morning.
“This is pigeon, yes?” Meghan double-checked before she broke off a piece of the pie.
The traditional dish from this part of North Africa was shared by the couple at an event to celebrate Moroccan cuisine.
The Duchess’ verdict? “It’s very good!”
He told her the dish was liked for being both “sweet and salty.”
We already know how much importance Meghan places on food – both in her private life and in her work.
The Together cookbook with the women from the traumatised community around Grenfell Tower has been perhaps the best example.
Today, the Duchess of Sussex congratulated the host of Moroccan TV’s Masterchef on everything he does to bring people together through food.
Chef Moha was showing Harry and Meghan the cooking inside a beautiful villa in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
Some orphaned youngsters from a nearby children’s home had been helping to prepare the food.
Harry got cross with a local Moroccan TV camera when his lens bashed into the head of one of the children showing off the cooking.
The prince walked over to the camera, pushed the lens away and gesticulated to the cameraman to back off.
He then checked the child was OK with a friendly pat on the arm.
It doesn’t take much to get the Duchess of Sussex excited about food.
This morning, they even made one of the recipes from the Together cookbook she had helped to publish in the UK to raise funds for the Hubb Community Kitchen in London.
The pancakes were tried by both her and Harry.
Harry said they were “delicious” (although it was hard to make out his words as he had a mouthful of pancake at the time!)
Meghan also wrote a message in the front of the Together book she presented to Chef Moha.
It read: “Chef Moha. Wishing you continued success and congratulating you on your incredible work in engaging the community in cooking. All the best. Meghan”.
The Duchess said that she and Harry would bring "the whole family next time," so Chef Moha could cook for them all when the baby arrives.
The chef gave the Duchess a copy of his book Le Vrai Goût du Maroc so she and Harry might be able to bake some pigeon pie of their own in their new kitchen when they move to Frogmore House in Windsor – which they are hoping to do next month.
