Hamburg stabbing: One dead and several injured in supermarket rampage

One person has died and several others have been injured, some seriously, after a man went on a stabbing rampage at a supermarket in the German city of Hamburg.

Police said the assailant, a 26-year-old from the United Arab Emirates,stabbed a person inside the store in the Barmbek district of the city on Friday afternoon before attacking five others as he fled.

His first victim, believed to be a 50-year-old German man, died at the scene.

A sixth man was injured as passers-by overpowered the attacker before he was arrested by police.

Police spokesman Timo Zill said authorities are investigating all possibilities in relation to the attack, which was carried out with a kitchen knife, according to the DPA news agency.

Detectives do not yet have any information on the assailant's motive, but there was no indication there was more than one attacker involved.
