How can you check the safety of your fridge freezer?

  • Video report by ITV News consumer editor Chris Choi

Police have confirmed the Grenfell Tower fire started in a Hotpoint fridge freezer.

With the government ordering an immediate technical examination of the model in question, here's what you can do to check if you are affected:

Which model is affected?

A product notice on Hotpoint's website confirms concerns have been raised over its branded fridge freezer made between March 2006 and July 2009.

The two model numbers are FF175BP (for white freezers) and FF175BG (graphite freezers).

More than 60,000 of the fridge freezers were sold between 2006 and 2009.

How can you find out the model number of your fridge freezer?

The company urges Hotpoint customers to check the model and serial number, which is usually on a sticker behind the salad container, or look for the model data label below on your appliance.

What should you do if you have the relevant model?

More than 60,000 of the fridge freezers were sold between 2006 and 2009.

Owners of the fridge freezers are asked to complete an online form, to which someone from the company will respond.

Alternatively, customers can use the firm's Live Chat system or call its customer service department during opening hours on the freephone hotline: 0800 316 3826

(Opening hours: Monday-Friday: 8.00am - 6.30pm, Saturday: 8.30am - 5.30pm, Sunday: 9.30am - 3.30pm).

  • What advice is given to concerned owners of other fridge freezers?

Professor Graeme Maident of London South Bank University told ITV News Consumer Editor Chris Choi any concerned fridge freezer owners should go to the manufacturer's website to see if their model has been recalled.

He also urged people to examine the back of their fridge, which should show evidence of previously undetected sparking or flames.
