Mourinho: Aguero 'smart' reaction to Fellaini headbutt

Midfielder Michael Carrick praised Manchester United's defence after they held on following Marouane Fellaini's sending-off to take a point against Manchester City.

Fellaini saw red for headbutting Sergio Aguero as fourth-placed City retained a one-point lead over their rivals following a frantic goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Fellaini's moment of madness - a clear butt on Aguero as the pair clashed following a trip by the Belgian - came six minutes from time in a tense stalemate.

"We would love to come here and win the game and we aimed to do that," Carrick told Sky Sports 1.

"We thought we could catch them on the break. We did have a couple of chances. We were defending for large spells of the game, but did that very well and at the end there was a bit of excitement and a bit of a flurry and I thought we saw the game out very well.

"It makes things a bit more difficult when you go down to 10. There wasn't too long left, but those six minutes felt a long time to see out, but we managed to do that.

"It's a point. It's tight up there (at the top of the table), but it's a point we can take from there and move on."

"I don't get involved," the defender said.

"He's my team-mate ultimately and whether he's red or blue I support him in every way. I don't want to get involved."

Kompany did, however, praise United's strike force and highlighted the pace of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial particularly.

"They are lightening quick and with a bit more experience they are going to cause a lot more trouble," Kompany added.

"Today was just a case of having played so many games against fast strikers and knowing what to do.

"Rashford and Martial have so much ability. Experience gives you that bit of an advantage."

United manager Jose Mourinho claimed he did not see the red card incident but thinks Aguero was "smart".

"I didn't watch it on the TV," the Portuguese boss said. "I spoke to Marouane and he's very disappointed as he feels it's a red card because he's Marouane Fellaini.

"I spoke with (referee) Martin Atkinson and Martin told me that in his opinion it was a red card.

"I didn't watch but probably I can guess it's a bit of a red card and that it's a bit of a very experienced, smart Argentinian player."
