Dylann Roof convicted of racially motivated killings of nine black church members

Dylann Roof has been convicted of the racially motivated killings of nine black church members in the USA.

The shooting happened at the Mother Emanuel church in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17 last year.

Jurors will now need to decide whether he will get the death penalty.

During the trial, the court heard how the self-declared white supremacist told the FBI he had gunned down worshippers in a bid to spark a race war.

Roof said he went on the killing spree because blacks were raping white women.

"What I did is still minuscule to what they're doing to white people every day," Roof was recorded as saying.

"I do consider myself a white supremacist," he admitted on the footage.

Roof told police that he thought he had killed "four or five" people and appeared to react with disbelief and remorse when he learned he had murdered nine people.

"Well, it makes me feel bad," he said.

When asked by an FBI agent if he was guilty, he replied: "Yes, I am guilty," Roof replied. "We all know I'm guilty."
