Boris Johnson speaks of 'friendship' with Saudi Arabia on visit

Boris Johnson reiterated Britain's close ties with Saudi Arabia on a visit to the country days after making comments criticising the Gulf Arab country.

In a press conference with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, Mr Johnson said: "I'm here to emphasise the friendship that exists between the UK and Saudi Arabia, and that is something that is developing and expanding."

"And it's also fair to say that we believe in candour in our relationship. Now is the time for us to talk about the positive things that we are doing together."

Mr Johnson reiterated his concerns for the suffering of the people of Yemen caught up in the cwar, but recognised Saudi Arabia's right to defend themselves.

Yemen has been in the grip of civil war between Saudi-backed government forces and rebel Houthi fighters - who are supported by Iran - since March 2015.
