Donald Trump selects Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services

US President-elect Donald Trump has selected Republican US Representative Tom Price of Georgia to be Secretary of Health and Human Services, the New York Times reported.

Mr Price, who worked for almost 20 years as an orthopaedic surgeon, served four terms in the Georgia State Senate before moving to Washington.

The Congressman has been a fierce critic of President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, and his appointment comes after Mr Trump vowed to dismantle Obamacare once he is in office.

The president-elect has said he favours keeping provisions that allow young people to remain on their parents' health insurance, and preventing insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.

Mr Price's appointment is the latest in a series of controversial Cabinet appointments from the President-elect.

Earlier this month, Mr Trump offered the role of attorney general to Jeff Sessions, who has been accused of racism.

He also appointed Stephen Bannon to the role White House strategist in a move decried by critics because of claims Mr Bannon is a white nationalist.

Retired general Michael Flynn accepted Mr Trump's offer to serve as national security adviser, while US Representative Mike Pompeo was appointed as CIA director.
