Lindsay Lohan apologies to Kettering over Christmas lights
Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan has recorded an apology to the people of Kettering - after breaking her pledge to turn on the town's Christmas lights.
In the video she blames a busy schedule for not 'lighting up' the town.
"Hi everyone in Kettering it's Lindsay Lohan I really wanted to make it there to light the tree but with my busy schedule I wasn't able to and I appreciate the offer. Happy Holidays."
The bizarre arrangements occurred after the star began tweeting her opinions on the night of the EU referendum.
Lohan originally agreed to travel to the town after implying earlier this year that nobody had heard of the place.
She was invited to visit after she suggested she had no idea where Kettering was, tweeting: '#REMAIN Sorry but #KETTERING where are you.'
The town's Conservative MP Philip Hollobone then invited Lohan "to switch on the Christmas lights ... redeeming her political reputation and raising money for good causes" in a speech to the House of Commons in June.
Which Lindsay happily accepted on Twitter:
When the town realised Lohan would not be attending they asked EastEnder's star Cheryl Fergison who is appearing in a pantomime in the town.
But it seems not everyone was happy with Lindsay's apology after someone on Twitter accused her of a lack of respect for the residents.
In an allegedly deleted Tweet, the actress reiterated that she regretted not being able to switch the lights on - but perhaps she could switch them off.
The Christmas tree lights were switched on as planned last night.
The Chief Executive of Kettering Borough Council told ITV News: "It would have been wonderful if Lindsay could have joined us this evening but sadly her other commitments made this impossible.
"However, we appreciate how hard she and her team tried to make this work and we were delighted to get a video message wishing us well."
