Gritney Spears: Council asks public to name new gritter - and gets brilliant responses

A council has been bombarded with funny responses after asking the public to name its new gritter.

With winter approaching, Oldham Council prepared for adverse weather conditions by arming itself with a brand new gritter machine - typically costing tens of thousands of pounds.

And having put the naming of the machine to the public vote, Oldham Council has - perhaps unsurprisingly - found itself in a "Boaty McBoatface" situation.

Here are some of the "grittest" suggestions so far:

  • Brad Grit

  • Lazy Grit

  • Usain Salt

  • I’m a Celebrity, Grit Me Out of Here

  • True Grit

  • Andy Gritchie

  • Gritt Ekland

  • Gritter Manchester

This is not the first time Oldham Council have left the naming of gritters to the public vote.

One of its current fleet is named "Freddie Salted".

Earlier this year, a new polar research ship shot to fame after the public were asked to name it.

"Boaty McBoatface" easily topped the popular vote with the backing of 124,000.

But officials overruled the vote and eventually named the vessel after naturalist Sir David Attenborough.

Oldham Council said the the closing date for name entries is 5pm on November 30.
