Boris Johnson will stay away from an 'emergency' EU foreign ministers' meeting called to discuss Donald Trump's US election win.

The foreign secretary - who earlier told his European counterparts to stop the "whinge-o-rama" over Mr Trump's victory - appeared to feel the meeting, to be held on Sunday, as unnecessary.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office confirmed Mr Johnson would skip the meeting, but said he would still attend a regular Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday.

"We do not see the need for an additional meeting on Sunday because the US election timetable is long established," the spokesman said.

"An act of democracy has taken place, there is a transition period and we will work with the current and future administrations to ensure the best outcomes for Britain."

It is understood a senior UK official will represent the UK at Sunday's meeting instead.

The news also comes as a senior German politician said the PM's hope that President-elect Trump will look favourably on the UK were "delusional".
