Canadian singer Drake has been nominated for a record 13 American Music Awards - surpassing Michael Jackson's previous record of 11 nominations.

Drake's nods include favourite rap/hip-hop song for 'Hotline Bling,' favourite pop/rock song for 'One Dance', favourite pop/rock album for 'Views', and artist of the year.

Jackson's record had stood for 23 years.

Rihanna was the next most nominated artist with seven mentions, while Adele and Justin Bieber both scored five.

Adele, Drake, Rihanna and Bieber will compete against Beyonce, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Twenty One Pilots, Carrie Underwood and The Weeknd for the title of 2016 artist of the year.

Former One Direction star Zayn Malik has been nominated for new artist of the year, alongside DNCE, The Chainsmokers, Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara.

The 2016 American Music Awards will be presented at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on November 20.
