Alastair Campbell: I would advise Donald Trump to vote for Hillary Clinton

Alistair Campbell has told Peston on Sunday he would advise Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to vote for Hillary Clinton in the forthcoming elections.

Mr Trump's lewd and sexually aggressive remarks has drawn international condemnation and in a joking exchange with Robert Peston on Sunday morning, the former spin doctor said he "would advise him to vote Hillary."

"I couldn't advise Trump, I find him beyond anything that I would want to be in the same room as - on so many levels.

"Even his apology was awful. I think Trump is hopefully in a big mess and the more he digs, the better it will be."

Mr Cambell believes his latest slur could be the "tipping point" in Mr Trump's presidential bid, but has warned against the complacency he believes dogged the Remain campaign in the EU referendum.

"My only worry is still that, like the Brexit debate, people felt those on [the Remain campaign] thought we were winning the arguments but there came a point where people stopped listening.

"I do worry still about America - the fact he has got as far as he has worries me. There are enough people out there just to say 'we're going to give the establishment a kicking'."

Sir Craig Oliver, who was the director of communications under then Prime Minister David Cameron, said if Donald Trump was a cabinet minister "he would be gone".

"If it was a cabinet minister he would be gone - but he's the official Republican candidate.

"It's very rare in politics to see a blow that actually knocks somebody and puts them on the canvas. Whether he gets up or not is very interesting.

"I think the serious problem for him is Conservatives around the world like to vote for people who are respectable.

"There is part of the Republican party who will look at him and say he is not respectable. A lot of them will sit on their hands, which will probably be fatal for him.

He added: "It's possible he could [win the election] but I suspect he won't."
