Rolling Stones could be releasing first album in more than a decade

The Rolling Stones could be releasing their first album in more than a decade.

The band told fans on Twitter than an announcement would be made later on Thursday.

Without giving specific details, the group posted a video clip showing Sir Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts playing a blues song in a studio, alongside the message "Coming October 6".

The tweet came after US producer Don Was told French newspaper Le Figaro that the Stones had made an album of covers of Chicago blues classics, which he said they recorded in three days.

"The record sounds very crude, very authentic," Was said. "It captures the essence of what they are."

Guitarist Eric Clapton is believed to be appearing on the new album.

The Rolling Stones have not released a studio album since A Bigger Bang in 2005.

On Friday, the band are scheduled play at Desert Trip, a new festival in California, which will also feature Sir Paul McCartney and Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.
