Scarlett Keeling: Men accused of raping and killing British 15-year-old in Goa cleared of all charges
A judge has cleared two men of raping and killing a British schoolgirl in Goa in 2008.
The body of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling was found bruised and half-naked on the popular Anjuna beach eight years ago.
She had suffered 50 separate injuries.
Her death was originally treated as an accident but eventually police charged two local men with causing her death.
It was alleged Samson D'Souza and Placido Carvalho plied Scarlett with drugs, raped her and left her on the beach where she drowned.
Tests revealed she had ecstasy, cocaine and LSD in her system when she died.
But a judge in Goa cleared the pair of rape and culpable homicide - a charge down from murder - six years after the case first came to court.
Before the verdicts, Scarlett's mother Fiona MacKeown told ITV News she hoped to get justice for her daughter after eight years of "living hell".
She flew out to Goa for the verdicts but will now take Scarlett's case to a higher court.
"I am disappointed with the verdict and I will definitely move to the higher court," she said.
Speaking afterwards, acquitted D'Souza told reporters: "I am happy with the verdict. Justice has prevailed."
