The actress best known for playing Liesl von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Charmian Carr, has died aged 73.

A spokesperson for the actress said that she died on Saturday, of complications from a rare form of dementia.

Carr was a college student when she auditioned for the 1965 hit, in which she memorable performed the song Sixteen Going on Seventeen.

Carr later wrote Forever Liesl and Letters to Liesl, two books about her experiences in the film.

After starring alongside Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in The Sound of Music, Carr went on to appear with Anthony Perkins in the Stephen Sondheim television musical Evening Primrose.

Carr fully embraced audiences' reverence for the musical, frequently appearing at sing-along performances at the Hollywood Bowl.

"I tell people that they should consider sing-along Sound Of Music like going to a therapist," she once said before a 2005 appearance.

"It's just a kind of therapy. They can move around. They can dance and talk back to the screen. They can skip their appointment with the shrink that week."

Following her acting career, Carr went on to become an interior designer in southern California. Her clients included Michael Jackson and Sound Of Music screenwriter Ernest Lehman.

Kym Karath, who played Gretl, appearing alongside Carr as the youngest of the von Trapp children, paid tribute to her former co-star.

Twentieth Century Fox, who produced Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, also paid tribute to the actress.

Actor and director Seth MacFarlane similarly took to Twitter to pay tribute.
