An exhausted Jonathan Brownlee, struggling with heatstroke, had to be helped over the finish line by his brother Alistair in a dramatic close to the World Triathlon Series in Mexico.

As the British triathlon star slowed towards the finish, his brother put his arm around his shoulders and the two ended the race together, with Alistair pushing Jonny over the line to ensure he came in second.

South African Henri Schoeman - who took bronze in Rio behind the Brownlees - came in first place, while Alistair Brownlee was third.

Jonny was taken to hospital following the race, leaving his second place spot on the podium empty.

But the Rio silver winner tweeted a thank-you to his brother from his hospital bed, accompanied by an image of him giving a 'thumbs-up'.

Speaking after the race, Alistair said he would have done the same for anyone because it was "the right thing to do".

"It's an awful position to be in," he said.

"If he'd conked out [before] the finish line there and there isn't medical support, it's a dangerous position to be in."

The dramatic events of the Mexico final aside, Spaniard Mario Mola was this year's overall title winner of the World Triathlon Series.
