Chelsea Manning ends hunger strike after treatment for gender dysphoria granted by army
US soldier Chelsea Manning has ended her hunger strike after the army said she will receive treatment for her gender dysphoria, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said.
Manning, who is serving a 35-year prison term for passing classified files to WikiLeaks, announced the hunger strike on Friday.
The 28-year-old Army Private was born male, but revealed after she was convicted of espionage that she identifies as a woman.
The ACLU, which is representing Manning, said in a statement that her treatment will begin with surgery that was recommended by her psychologist.
Manning is currently serving her sentence at an all-male military facility. She was convicted in 2013 of leaking more than 700,000 secret files to Wikileaks.
In July, the whistleblower's lawyers announced that Manning tried to kill herself.
She subsequently posted a message on Twitter saying she was fine and "happy to be alive".
