At least 11 people dead after 5.7-magnitude earthquake in Tanzania
At least 11 people have been killed by an earthquake in Tanzania with many more feared dead according to officials.
The 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook the Lake Victoria region and the tremors were felt as far as western Kenya and parts of Uganda, which share the waters of the lake. The quake was also felt in Kigali, Rwanda.
Augustine Olomi, regional police commander for Kagera region, said the 11 people who died were in brick structures in Bukoba.
A statement from the Tanzanian president's office said he was "shocked by reports of the earthquake that caused the death of many people, injury to others and destruction of property".
