Tsunami warning issued after New Zealand earthquake

A tsunami warning has been issued and the evacuation of some coastal areas has been ordered, following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of New Zealand.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the earthquake which struck 104 miles off the east coast of New Zealand's North Island in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 34 miles.

Civil defence authorities in New Zealand issued the warning following the quake which struck at 4.37am local time.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said it did not see the earthquake as a major threat.

The quake comes just one day after a magnitude-5.7 earthquake in the same area, 62 miles north east of Te Araroa on the North Island's east coast.
