Donald Trump says he and the Mexican president discussed his proposed wall along the 2,000-mile border between Mexico and the United States - but not who would pay for it.

Mr Trump has consistently said that Mexico would be forced to pay for the construction of the barrier throughout his campaign.

But when asked about it after his surprise impromptu meeting with Enrique Pena Nieto in Mexico, the Republican nominee replied: "We didn’t discuss who will pay for the wall."

During the meeting, Mr Trump called Mexicans "amazing people", having previously called them rapists and murderers.

“Mexicans are just beyond reproach,” he said. “Spectacular, spectacular and hardworking people.”

Mr Pena Nieto, who has been severely criticised for inviting Mr Trump to the country following his past controversial comments, said while they still did not agree on "certain topics", their meeting was "open and constructive".

He said Mexico would continue to work constructively with the US - whoever wins November's presidential election.

But perhaps in an effort to temper growing anger towards him from his own people, Mr Pena Nieto told Mr Trump that Mexicans deserved his respect.

Mr Trump ended his speech by telling Mr Pena Nieto: "I call you a friend. Thank you."

He will travel to Arizona later on Wednesday to make what he calls a "major" speech on immigration.
