The killer of a British backpacker in Australia may have been obsessed with her, police said.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 21, was stabbed to death at a hostel in the Home Hill area of Queensland on Tuesday night.

A 30-year-old Brit, Tom Jackson, was also critically injured in the attack as he tried to save her.

There were reports the killer shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) during the attack.

Superintendent Ray Rohweder said they had found no evidence the suspect had been radicalised but were not ruling anything out.

He told a press conference they were investigating if the suspect had a romantic interest in Miss Ayliffe-Chung.

"I don't believe there was any romance. There's no doubt about that from Mia's point of view - but it is certainly a line of enquiry," he said.

Supt Rohweder said the suspect may have smoked cannabis before the attack but there was no evidence he had consumed alcohol or harder drugs.

Miss Ayliffe-Chung, from Wirksworth, Derbyshire died at the scene after being stabbed multiple times.

A dog was also killed in the attack and a man thought to be the hostel owner suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the suspect was taken to hospital after the attack - but became violent when he was transferred to a police station.

Several officers suffered cuts as they tried to restrain him and one was bitten on the leg.
