A waitress in an American cafe was left a racist message from a couple she served, rather than the customary tip.

The xenophobic comment left for Sadie Elledge after she served the pair lunch at a Virginia cafe read: "We only tip citizens."

"It's rude and disrespectful. I've never met, I've never done anything to them", the 18-year-old told local television channel WHSV.

The teenager was born in the US but added the fact that she is of Honduran and Mexican descent "shouldn't even matter".

Jess' Lunch, the restaurant in Harrisonburg where the incident took place is an immigrant-created and owned business.

Ms Elledge said that the couple who left the message had been acting strangely as she served them, not talking to her and only nodding their heads, and they left quickly after paying.

Ms Elledge added that if the couple came to the restaurant again she would still serve them.

However, her boss was not of the same opinion, adding: "I would like for them to not come here unless they regret what they did."
