The head of the Olympic Council of Ireland has left hospital and been taken to a police station over the alleged illegal sale of tickets for the Rio Games.

Patrick Hickey temporarily stood down from his position after being detained at a hotel in the Barra da Tijuca area of the city - something caught on camera.

But Mr Hickey was transferred to hospital after complaining of chest pains, where he underwent cardiac tests.

The 71-year-old was monitored at nearby Samaritano Hospital until around 4pm on Thursday.

Hickey has been formally accused under Brazilian law of ticket touting, running a cartel and illicit marketing.

This is a stage in the legal process that is not equivalent to being charged in British law but is a preliminary step in that direction. Mr Hickey has denied any wrongdoing.
