Shaunae Miller won the women's 400m final with a technique different to that of the majority of track athletes: she dived across the finish line.

The 22-year-old Bahamian denied the USA's Allyson Felix a win, after she crossed the line in 49.44 seconds, compared to Felix's 49.51 seconds.

Social media users were having none of it, with many taking to Twitter to voice their opinions on the controversial finish.

At first people were not sure what they had just witnessed.

Then they began to question whether diving across the finish line is a legitimate way to finish a race.

Other users responded by clarifying the rules of athletics.

And others pointed out that the track is for running, while diving is reserved for the pool.

Allyson Felix's supporters were not happy at all.

There were others who felt it was a legitimate way to end a race, and that the Bahamas' only medal of the Games so far should be celebrated.

And then there were those who thought the whole thing was just a bit of fun.
