Greg Rutherford suggests Team GB may have lost out on medals because Russia was allowed in Rio 2016
British athletes may have lost out on Olympic medals in Rio 2016 because Russian athletes were allowed to compete, Greg Rutherford has suggested.
Rutherford, who won a bronze medal in the men's long jump at the weekend, welcomed the decision of the athletics governing body the IAAF to ban Russians from competing in track and field.
However, he criticised the decision to allow Russian athletes to take part in other sports in the Games.
"I think the stance should have been taken that Russia across the board was removed from these Olympic Games," Rutherford told ITV News.
"It would have sent out the right message to any other countries possibly contemplating going down the same route.
"My stance has always been anybody who's ever failed a test ever, should never be in an Olympic Games ever again."
Rutherford added that aside from Russians, there are athletes of other nationalities across many other sports that should not be competing in Rio 2016.
The Olympic medallist also opened up about having his phone stolen after leaving it in an official car that was ferrying athletes during the Games.
"I ran back in - as I came back, the car had left with my phone sitting on the seat," he said. "Apparently now the phone doesn't exist anymore."
Rutherford said the most painful part about his phone being stolen was losing all the images of his 22-month-old son.
"Some of the memories that are on there are a bit frustrating for me at the moment," he said.
