Chris Froome wins bronze for Team GB in men's time trial
Tour de France winner Chris Froome has won bronze for Team GB in the men's time trial.
Gold went to Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara, a four-time world champion, who delivered a masterclass to win in one hour 12 mins and 15 seconds across the 55km course.
Cancellara was 47 seconds faster than silver-medal-winner Tom Dumoulin of the Netherlands in the event that sees the riders given staggered starts of 90 seconds.
Froome, the last of the cyclists to begin the time trial, struggled for pace in the early stages of the course but gained time on his competitors in the second half of the race.
Froome, who claimed bronze four years ago at London 2012 in the event that saw Bradley Wiggins win gold for Team GB, was delighted to reach the Olympic podium in Brazil weeks after his success in Paris.
"(With) the year I've had, to come here and medal again, it's incredible, an incredible feeling," Froome told the BBC.
He accepted Cancellara, who won gold in the event eight years ago at the Beijing Games, was in a class of his own on the day in his farewell season in cycling.
"Fabian was the clear, clear winner," Froome said. "If I had lost by five or six seconds I might be disappointed but Fabian was the clear winner today. I gave it everything I had ... but I just didn't have any more."
Britain's Geraint Thomas set a fastest time as he came home but was ultimately bettered by eight other riders, leaving him ninth.
Thomas was a late addition to the race for Team GB after several riders from other nations pulled out of the event following crashes in Saturday's road race.
The Welshman also crashed during the road race but opted to race again despite bad injuries.
"I lost quite a lot of skin in my crash and my hip took a pretty big knock, but other than that my legs are feeling good," he said ahead of the race.
