Team GB delayed in cheering Adam Peaty swim gold by TV fail

A technical glitch meant the British athletes at the Olympic Village in Rio were left in limbo as Adam Peaty closed in on the team's first gold of the Games.

The Team GB competitors, including athletics team captain Adam Gemili and heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, had gathered in front of a giant TV to cheer on the favourite in the men's 100m breaststroke final.

Women's 100m runner Asha Philip recorded their reaction to what would prove a historic swim on her phone.

But the race was interrupted in the final stages because of apparent buffering, causing squeals among Peaty's colleagues.

Cries of "oh my God" and "you're joking" were heard as the group watched the action freeze save for the rotating dial in the middle of the screen.

The transmission restored after a delay of around 15 seconds to complete the race and confirm Peaty as the team's first gold medal winner.

The Uttoxeter swimmer set a new world record as he won gold in the men's 100m breaststroke before Carlin took silver in the women's 400m freestyle.

Gemili later took to Twitter to congratulate the team's first golden boy.

Team GB's Twitter feed offered another perspective of the cheering group of athletes.
