Crowdfunding bid to bring home Brit who 'wanted to kill' Donald Trump

The mother of the British man accused of trying to shoot Donald Trump at a rally in June has set up an online crowd-funding campaign to cover the costs for his legal fight.

Lynne Sandford, 41, has launched the campaign to pay for her 20-year-old son's battle to return to the UK after he was put on suicide watch in US prison.

Michael Sandford allegedly attempted to grab a policeman's gun to kill the Republican presidential nominee during a rally at Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas on 18 June.

He told officials later that he wanted "to shoot and kill Donald Trump".

Sandford is due to stand trial in Las Vegas in August, pleading not guilty to charges of being an illegal alien in possession of a gun and disrupting government business.

The campaign his mother started says he is "shackled and handcuffed, and on suicide watch" in prison in Nevada.

Ms Sandford said she is worried about his mental state and wants him to serve his sentence in a psychiatric hospital in the UK, as he suffers from "severe mental health problems".

She said: "I am very grateful for all the help and kindness that I have received from my friends and the general public and I hope that they will be kind enough to support this campaign so that Michael can be looked after by the appropriate authorities."

Saimo Chahal, who is advising the Sandfords in the UK, said: "We hope to influence the legal process so Michael can be returned to the UK so that he can receive the medical treatment which he needs so badly."
