Chris Evans will face no charges over allegations he sexually assaulted a woman in the 1990s, according to his spokesman.

A statement from the Top Gear host said the case against him had been dropped.

"The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the complaint has been investigated, but it fails to meet the evidential test to warrant any further action," the statement said.

Earlier this month The Sun newspaper reported Evans was to be questioned by police after a complaint was made against him by a former colleague.

The incident reportedly happened on May 23 this year.

The Metropolitan Police said officers from the sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command had investigated and a man in his 50s was interviewed under caution on Thursday.

A police spokesman said: "The decision was made by the police that there was insufficient evidence to proceed."
