P&O: Dover travel chaos 'must never happen again'

The travel chaos which erupted at the port of Dover "must never be allowed to happen again", P&O Ferries said.

New security checks and a holiday exodus as schools broke up for summer caused "extraordinary" tailbacks with some waiting up to 20 hours.

Travellers heading towards France were warned they could face weeks of disruption but things were said to be due to return to normal on Monday.

Helen Deeble, P&O chief executive said French authorities must provide enough staff to ensure the new checks can be processed quickly and efficiently.

She added: "The scenes which we saw at the weekend at the port of Dover, with holidaymakers delayed for completely unacceptable lengths of time, must never be allowed to happen again.

"We at P&O Ferries did everything we could to keep passengers moving on the English Channel, providing extra sailings and staff on duty.

"We would nevertheless like to apologise to all the passengers whose holidays were affected and assure them that we will be talking to the British and French authorities this week to ensure there is no repetition of this disruption."
