Volunteers offer more help as police warn of further delays at Dover

Volunteers who delivered water to stranded drivers heading to Dover said they are prepared to assist again on Sunday as police warn that the disruption is likely to continue into Monday.

A team from Khalsa Aid delivered thousands of water bottles and cereal bars to motorists on Satuday night as they were held in delays at the Port of Dover of 11 hours or more as temperatures soared.

The charity's founder, Ravinder Singh, and several others loaded up a van and pick-up truck with supplies and travelled from Slough to help stranded travellers.

Mr Singh said they are ready to provide further assistance if the delays continue on Sunday.

A police helicopter helped distribute water to motorists on Saturday but Mr Singh said that they welcomed the additional supplies.

"They said 'Okay, we'll take your offer up, when can you deliver?' So we went to the local cash and carry with a pick-up truck and a vanload, and drove with our vehicles full of water," Mr Singh said.

Khalsa Aid provides humanitarian aid in disaster areas and conflict zones around the world. But it has also helped provide aid during disasters in the UK including floods.

Mr Singh said the situation at Dover came as a surprise to the team.

He said: "It was very strange to see people keen for water in a country so developed. It wasn't something that we were expecting to be honest."
