A prison officer is alive - thanks to six inmates who broke out of their cell to help save his life.

The officer fell unconscious while supervising a group of prisoners, who were in a holding cell in Weatherford District Courts Building in Texas waiting to appear in court.

"He was just talking to them, and he just kind of collapsed," Captain Mark Arnett told NBC News. "As soon as the jailer went down, they started to yell".

Footage shows the prisoners, who had their hands cuffed, breaking out of their holding cell when shouts failed to raise the alarm.

The handcuffed inmates manage to break out to raise the alarm.
The inmates' actions helped save the guard's life.

"They grabbed his radio and tried to radio for help," Captain Arnett said.

When fellow guards heard the commotion they eventually came down and called for paramedics who then performed CPR on the guard.

The guard has since recovered and is due to return to work on Monday.

"They definitely saved his life. There's no doubt about that," Captain Arnett said.
