Andrea Leadsom supporters march on Parliament: 'What do we want? Leadsom for leader! When do we want it? Now!'

Andrea Leadsom made a speech on her campaign to be the next Prime Minister

Campaigners for Conservative leadership candidate Andrea Leadsom have marched through the streets of London, chanting their support.

Video footage shows the group - led by campaign chief Tim Loughton and proposer Penny Mordaunt - shouting: "What do we want? Leadsom for leader! When do we want it? Now!", before breaking into cheers.

It came ahead of a speech by Ms Leadsom, one of three remaining candidates to succeed David Cameron as the next British Prime Minister, in which she called on the crowd to "banish the pessimists", arguing: "No one needs to fear our decision to leave the EU."

During the speech, the pro-Brexit Ms Leadsom said the forecasts of disaster for Sterling, equities and interest rates had not proved correct, and said a weaker pound meant people would simply spend more on home-grown products, which would prove good for the economy.

She told her audience that "prosperity, not austerity" should be the government's goal.

She said she expected to see "continued growth" in post-Brexit figures, and said she believed people would enjoy a pay rise.

ITV News Deputy Political Editor Chris Ship, who was at the speech, said this was a "bold claim".

If she is voted in, she said her government would leave the EU "carefully", reassuring "European friends and businesses" who were worried about change.

Continued tariff-free trade with the EU must be a "priority", she said, as must seizing the opportunity for new free-trade agreements with other fast-growing economies around the world.

On immigration, she said she would work towards "fair but controlled" immigration, and promised all those legally already working here would be welcome to stay.

Meanwhile, the UK government would give farmers the same amount of money they currently receive from the EU, she added.
