Andrea Leadsom bolstered as pro-Brexit choice in Tory leadership contest
Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom is emerging as the possible pro-Brexit choice for the Tory leadership, with Iain Duncan Smith announcing his backing for her as the next Prime Minister.
With the endorsement from the former work and pensions secretary Ms Leadsom is becoming a possible surprise rival to Home Secretary Theresa May.
Mr Duncan Smith said he had spoken to all the leadership candidates and had "huge confidence" in Mrs Leadsom.
"I believe that Andrea's strong family background, business experience, compassion, commitment to social justice and dedication will make her a great prime minister for the UK," he said.
According to the Telegraph, about 30 MPs who had previously backed Mr Johnson for the job will next week endorse Mrs Leadsom.
The move will be a blow to Michael Gove who aimed to be the pro-Brexit candidate.
