Hodgson resigns as England manager after shock Iceland loss

Roy Hodgson has resigned as England manager after his side were knocked out of Euro 2016 following a humiliating2-1 defeat to Iceland.

An "extremely disappointed" Hodgson told reporters: "My contract was always up after the Euros, so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group of players."

Hodgson's coaches Ray Lewington and Gary Neville will also leave their roles with the national team.

Wayne Rooney's fourth minute penalty sparked wild celebrations from English fans.

But Rangar Sigurdsson equalised before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson finished a slick passing move to put the minnows ahead in the 18th minute.

The defeat - to a country competing at their first major tournament and with a population of 329,000 - is arguably the most embarrassing in England's history.

Fans chanted "You're not fit to wear the shirt" at the final whistle.
