Judo star smiles for first time since awaking from coma

Stephanie Inglis, the British judo star critically injured in a motorbike accident in Vietnam, smiled on Saturday for the first time since waking from a coma.

Miss Inglis, a Commonwealth Games medallist, is due to be flown to hospital in Scotland by a UK air ambulance from Bangkok.

A family spokeswoman said the 27-year-old smiled when told by her parents that she would soon be going home.

Miss Inglis is due to be flown home within the next 24 hours, the spokeswoman added, a trip which will require stops in India, Georgia, and Austria.

The sportswoman suffered head injuries on May 12 when her skirt caught in the wheel of a motorcycle taxi and pulled her off the bike, on her way to work teaching English in Ha Long.

Doctors in Vietnam initially gave her a 1% chance of survival, but she emerged from a medically-induced coma within the last week.
