Manchester United and Spain goalkeeper David de Gea described allegations about his private life which emerged just hours before the start of Euro 2016 as "lies".

The 25-year-old shot-stopper was the subject of rumours he had been sent home from Spain's Euro 2016 training base following a story in Spanish newspaper El Diario on Friday.

However, de Gea appeared at a press conference in Saint-Martin-de-Re, France, to address the matter later that day.

He pledged to focus on training with the current European champions.

"I'm more surprised than anyone by this news. I want to deny it. It is a lie and a falsehood", he said.

"It gives me more reason to stay with Spain, in the company of my team-mates. It's in the hands of my lawyers".

He added: "I'm very calm. I'm just looking forward to going out to train and enjoying myself.

"I've no idea where this has come from. I know it's all false. We have to move on".
