There is a great deal to be cynical about in America. The political process is failing. The rise of Donald Trump puts demagoguery and bigotry at the heart of the American conversation.

But then we have this moment.

After 240 years, for the first time a major American political party will have a woman as its Presidential nominee.

Whatever you think of Hillary Clinton - and she has many critics - this is an historic moment. One that our children will seek to understand and analyse in their history exams.

I can see the history question now: Why did it take until 2016 for America to embrace a woman as a Presidential candidate?

Well, this morning we have that candidate. And she has already lived in the White House, been a US Senator, a Secretary of State, and is one of the best known figures in the world.

Her theme for the 22 weeks left of the campaign is clear: build bridges not walls; be inclusive not discriminatory; reject attempts to divide us.

This is of course an assault on Donald Trump, just the start of a multi-billion dollar effort to ensure a Democrat stays in the White House.

There is a long way to go until Election Day on November 8th. But now we know the terrain it will be fought on.

It's overwhelmingly favourable to Hillary Clinton.
